In Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN), the appearance of more active primary users (PUs) might require blocking of one or more secondary user (SU) transmissions to maintain interference constraints at PU receivers and Quality of Service (QoS) constraints of SUs. In general, SU transmitters need to adjust their transmission powers to maintain these constraints at all times. In this paper, we are interested in maximizing the number of concurrent SU flows under new PU arrivals and performing power allocation for SU links belonging to maintained data flows to maximize the minimum flow capacity. In particular, we develop a flow maintenance and power control scheme to solve this problem, which is referred to as Flow-Based Power Control (FBPC). The proposed scheme comprises two phases where we attempt to find a best set of flows with maximum size in the first phase and maximize the minimum flow capacity through power control in the second phase. To reduce computation complexity required in the first phase, we develop a flow combination metric, which is used to find the best flow combination. Moreover, we formulate power allocation problem that maximizes the minimum flow capacity and show how to transform it into a geometric convex program. Numerical results are presented to show the efficiency of the proposed flow combination metric and the desirable performance of the proposed two-phase flow maintenance and power control scheme.

In Cognitive Radio Network, secondary users opportunistically use the licensed channels to transmit data. The secondary users first conduct the local sensing to determine the unoccupied channels and then choose the satisfied channel in the available channel set to transmit. However, the sensing results might not be accurate due to many problems: channel fading or shadowing, noise, hidden primary users or the aggregated interference caused by other secondary user transmissions. In this paper, we are interested in improving the spectrum sensing performance by reducing the missed-detection sensing caused by the hidden primary user problem. Particularly, we first proposed the channel state transition diagram capturing the hidden terminal possibility and then develop a collaborative scheme to exchange the sensing result between secondary users. Based on the summarized sensing results achieved from secondary user neighbors and proposed channel state diagram, each secondary will build its own channel table listing all available channels. Numerical results show that the proposed spectrum sensing scheme enhances the sensing results and the network performance.

Cloud computing is an emergent paradigm that allows customers to rent infrastructure, platforms and software as a service. With resource sharing and reuse through virtualization technology, cloud environments become even more cost effective and flexible. Nevertheless, networking within virtualized cloud still presents some challenges in performance and resource alloca- tion. In this paper, we propose DBA-VM, a Dynamic Bandwidth Allocator for Virtual Machines with regard to the established SLAs. The proposed scheme enforces the isolation between the virtual machines through the transmission bandwidth adjustment at the network I/O channel. The experimental performance evaluation shows that DBA-VM allows to the virtualized system to respect each virtual machine SLA while reducing the global physical resources (CPU and memory) consumption.

In wireless mesh networks, network coding can be adapted and deployed for performance enhancement. Some early results such as COPE, BEND and DCAR show that the use of network coding can outperform the original 802.11 networks. However, these network coding architectures have two limitations: (i) the coding chances inevitably depend on the established route, (ii) traffic is strictly coded based on the two-hop coding pattern. In this paper, a novel and enhanced network coding architecture, Distributed Opportunistic Diffused Encoding (DODE), is proposed. DODE combines (i) the diffused gain from BEND and (ii) the generalized coding condition from DCAR to completely solve the limitations present in the three previous propositions. In addition, we propose a routing metric called Shortest Path with Enriched Neighborhood routing Metric (SPENM) which allows DODE to follow the most enriched coding chance path and also to enjoy the diffused gain. We implement DODE system in NS-2. The simulation results show that DODE outperforms 802.11, COPE, BEND and DCAR.

Nowadays, wireless networks with heterogeneous technologies are largely deployed and, mobile terminals have multiple interfaces to access these networks. This raises many research issues such as the simultaneous access to heterogeneous networks and the mobility management. This paper proposes to manage the mobility of a terminal in this context. In particular, we want to guarantee that, while a terminal is moving from a given network to a different one, the quality of service of its applications will be maintained. For this purpose, we combine a multi-homing protocol (SHIM6) with an IMS architecture. The protocol SHIM6 ensures a seamless change of networks without any application disruption. The IMS architecture allows the establishment of multimedia session with quality of service. Our solution can manage the inter-domain mobility of a terminal in a reactive and proactive mode. For this purpose, we implement a SIP proxy inside the mobile terminal. The experimental evaluation shows the feasibility of the SHIM6-IMS integration and a considerable reduction of the handover delay.

We present a novel resilient routing policy for controlling the routing across peering links between Internet carriers. Our policy is aimed at offering more dependability and better performance to the routing decision with respect to the current practice (e.g., hot-potato routing). Our work relies on a non-cooperative game framework, called Peering Equilibrium MultiPath (PEMP), that has been recently proposed. PEMP allows two carrier providers to coordinate a multipath route selection for critical flows across peering links, while preserving their respective interests and independence. In this paper, we propose a resilient PEMP execution policy accounting for the occurrence of potential impairments (traffic matrix variations, intra-AS and peering link failures) that may occur in both peering networks. We mathematically define how to produce robust equilibrium sets and describe how to appropriately react to unexpected network impairments that might take place. The results from extensive simulations show that, under a realistic failure scenario, our policy adaptively prevents from peering link congestions and excessive route deviations after failures.

Virtualisation

In the few last years, the Internet has known an impressive success. This success has stimulated the development and the deployment of new technologies and advances applications. Nonetheless, due to its size and scope, this large network has become victim of its own success. Innovative approaches are required to overcome the shortfalls of current systems and to design Next Generation Internet. In this context, an ambitious vision of future Inernet would include network virtualization which presents a viable solution to deal with the current Internet impasse. It provides a promising way to deploy different network architectures and protocols over a shared physical infrastructure. However, in spite of its multiple advantages, network virtualization adds more complexity on network systems. A promising solution to address this huge complexity consists in developing systems which are capable of managing themselves, called autonomic computing systems or self-* systems. This paper proposes an agent-based autonomic framework which is able to self manage virtual resources. We provide a detailed description of the proposed autonomic architecture and we focus on a real test-bed implementation and testing of our framework. Experiment results show the ability of our system to self-configure its resources in order to maintain a required QoS level.

This paper presents a class of routing protocols for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) called IGRP, Intersection- based Geographical Routing Protocol, which outperforms existing routing schemes in city environments. IGRP is based on an effective selection of road intersections through which a packet must pass to reach the gateway to the Internet. The selection is made in a way that guarantees, with high probability, network connectivity among the road intersections while satisfying quality of service (QoS) constraints on the tolerable delay, the bandwidth usage, and the error rate. Geographical forwarding is used to transfer packets between any two intersections on the path, reducing the path’s sensitivity to individual node movements. To achieve this, we formulate the QoS routing problem mathematically as a constrained optimization problem. Specifically, analytical expressions for the connectivity probability, end-to-end delay, hop count as well as bit error rate of a route in a two-way road scenario are derived. Then, we propose a genetic algorithm to solve the optimization problem. Numerical and simulation results show that the proposed approach gives optimal or near-optimal solutions and improves significantly the VANETs performance when compared with several prominent routing protocols, such as GPSR, GPCR and OLSR.

In this paper we propose CDEEC, a Connectivity Degree-based and Energy Efficient Clustering protocol, for wireless sensor networks in order to achieve further energy conservation while extending the network lifetime. The main idea behind our proposal is to consider, in addition to the information about the nodes' residual energy, the specific topology characteristics of the network, such as the connectivity degree, in the selection process of the cluster heads. To evaluate the performance of our proposal, we compare it to classical HEED-based (Hybrid, Energy-Efficient Distributed Clustering) networks. Simulation results show that significant energy conservation can be achieved.

Inter-Autonomous System (AS) links represent nowadays the real bottleneck of the Internet. Internet carriers may coordinate to efficiently balance the load, but the current practice is often based on an uncoordinated selfish routing. Firstly, we assess this issue by characterizing BGP route deviations across top-tier interconnections we could detect using recent Internet routing history data. Then, in order to improve the current practice, we present a novel game-theoretical framework to efficiently coordinate the routing on inter-AS links while modeling the non-cooperative carrier behavior. It relies on a coordinated use of the Multi-Exit Discriminator (MED) attribute of BGP, hence it is nicknamed ClubMED (Coordinated MED). We define the routing policy that shall be implemented upon Nash equilibria and Pareto-efficient profiles. We emulated the interconnection between the Internet2 and the Geant2 networks, comparing our proposition to the current BGP practice. The results show that the route stability can significantly be reinforced, the global routing cost can be significantly reduced, and the inter-AS link congestion can be avoided.

The evolution of technologies, particularly the emergence of multi-interface terminals (3G, WLAN, WMAN, etc), totally changes the vision of services offered to users in the future. Multi-homing and multipath transmission support becomes more and more indispensable to satisfy user demands . Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is a modified version of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) which allows using simultaneously multiple paths for data transmission. It aims to improve the throughput of TCP connection in a manner that a MPTCP connection over multiple paths should achieve at least a no worse throughput than a single TCP connection over the best constituent path. In a previous work, we have evaluated the load sharing of MPTCP without the coupled congestion control option. In this paper, the couple congestion control of MPTCP is enabled. The measurement results show that MPTCP with coupled congestion control provides a better performance. However, the heterogeneous networks environment (Ethernet, Wifi and 3G) still has a great impact on MPTCP throughput and reveals the need of an intelligent algorithm for interface selection in MPTCP.

Handling mobility at the transport layer is an interesting approach to attain seamless handover in the context of heterogeneous access networks. To support terminal mobility, an extension of SCTP called SCTP-DAR (SCTP Dynamic Address Reconfiguration) (a.k.a. mobile SCTP) has been defined allowing SCTP endpoints to update IP address and inform the remote peer about primary address change. However, mobile SCTP suffers from performance degradation during handover. In this paper, we investigate two handover-related issues: reduction of data rate immediately after handover and packet reordering. The first issue is caused by the congestion control mechanism, which forces the ongoing traffic to enter the slow-start phase when moving into the new path after handover. The second issue is caused by the asymmetric characteristics of access networks such as the different bandwidths and delays in heterogeneous access networks. In order to solve these issues, we propose to use a combination of two mechanisms, congestion control parameter update and buffer retransmission.

In this paper, we address virtual network embedding problem. Indeed, our objective is to map virtual networks in the substrate network with minimum physical resources while satisfying its required QoS in terms of bandwidth, power pro- cessing and memory. In doing so, we minimize the reject rate of requests and maximize returns for the substrate network provider. Since the problem is NP-hard and to deal with its computational hardness, we propound a new scalable embedding strategy named VNE-AC based on the Ant Colony metaheuristic. The intensive simulations and evaluation results show that our proposal enhances the substrate provider’s revenue and outperforms the related strategies found in current literature.

The significant growth in the global Internet traffic and routing table size requires solutions to address Internet scalability and resiliency. A number of proposals have considered moving away from the flat legacy Internet routing to a two-level hierarchical routing, separating edge networks from transit carrier networks. In this paper, we study the extended inter-domain traffic engineering capabilities arising in a transit-edge separated Internet routing, focusing on those multi-homed edge networks (e.g., small ISPs, Cloud/content providers, large corporations) that aim at increasing their Internet resiliency experience. We model using game theory the interaction between distant independent edge networks exchanging large traffic volumes, with the goal of seeking efficient edge-to-edge load-balancing routing solutions. The proposed traffic engineering framework relies on a non-cooperative potential game, built upon path prepending- and path diversity- dependent costs, that indicates efficient equilibrium solution for the edge-to-edge load-balancing coordination problem. Simulations on real instances show that, in comparison with the alternative multipath BGP and normal LISP, we can achieve significantly higher resiliency and stability. In particular, our simulation for an illustrating case shows four-times more stable multipath routing solutions with a five-times larger path diversity

Network virtualization is a promising technology that offers high levels of flexibility, isolation, extensibility and cost-effectiveness. In this paper, we focus on router virtualization. We evaluate the forwarding performance of virtual routers when the data plane runs in the guests. This scenario offers a high level of isolation and flexibility, however, it suffers from performance limitations due to the virtualization overhead. We show that the he I/O communication between the driver domain and the guests is the bottleneck. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new packets aggregation mechanism that transfers groups of packets between the driver domain and the guests. This enhancement makes the forwarding performance of one guest scale up to 1600 Kp/s. Furthermore, we propose a dimensioning tool in order to determine the maximum achievable throughput with regard to the container size.

A Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) is a network without any pre-existing communication infrastructure. Wireless mobile nodes can freely and dynamically self-organize into arbitrary and temporary network topologies. There have been many challenges on the dynamic structure of MANET. One of those is to find the path from a source node to a destination node in the network. In this paper, we propose a formula of interference and a node-disjoint Interference-Aware Multi-Path OLSR routing protocol (IA-MPOLSR) which is based on the Optimized Link State routing protocol (OLSR) for MANET to increase the stability and reliability of the network. From our simulation results, we show that the IA-MPOLSR' packet delivery fraction is remarkably higher than the one of IA-OLSR, the original OLSR and OLSR-feedback. We also show that IA-MPOLSR' normalized routing load is lower than the corresponding results from IA-OLSR, the original OLSR and OLSR-feedback protocols

It is generally admitted that interdomain peering links represent nowadays the main bottleneck of the Internet, par- ticularly because of lack of coordination between providers, which use independent and “selfish” routing policies. We are interested in identifying possible “light” coordination strategies that would allow carriers to better control their peering links while preserving their independence and respective interests. We propose a robust multipath routing coordination framework for peering carriers, which relies on the multiple-exit discriminator (MED) attribute of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) as signaling medium. Our scheme relies on a game theory modeling, with a non-cooperative potential game considering both routing and congestions costs. Peering equilibrium multipath (PEMP) coordination policies can be implemented by selecting Pareto-superior Nash equilibria at each carrier. We compare different PEMP policies to BGP Multipath schemes by emulating a realistic peering scenario. Our results show that the routing cost can be decreased by roughly 10% with PEMP. We also show that the stability of routes can be significantly improved and that congestion can be practically avoided on the peering links. Finally, we discuss practical im- plementation aspects and extend the model to multiple players highlighting the possible incentives for the resulting extended peering framework.

The main challenge in the development of future wireless communication systems is to pro- vide users with a wide range of services across different radio access technologies through a single mobile terminal, while maintaining the quality of service requirements. Thus, the need for seamless interworking between heterogeneous wireless communication systems consisting of multiple radio access technologies and overlapping networks emerges. In this article, we address the main issues that arise while implementing the interworking mecha- nisms between different radio access networks. An interworking mechanism based on IEEE 802.21 framework is proposed and described in detail. We combine concepts of autonomic networking in the design of the framework in order to use intelligence to provide flexibility, accessibility and transparency to the mobile users.

This paper deals with the design and dimensioning of a novel survivable optical network structure, called Petaweb, that can reach a total capacity of several Pb/s (1015 bit/s). The Petaweb has a composite-star architecture that allows two-hop connections between edge nodes through disconnected core nodes. Prior studies of the same authors have tackled the optimization of a Petaweb network architecture with regular and quasi-regular topologies. In this paper, reliability and survivability issues are addressed by introducing a dedicated path protection strategy into the design model. We present by extensive numerical results the reliability and survivability properties of the Petaweb core architecture with respect to single fiber link, core node, or switching plane failure and to switching site disconnection.

One fundamental limit for synchronizing a packet trace is that the two measurement systems that can be used to timestamp the packets, the operating system and the network interface, have mutually exclusive properties. The OS clock can be stabilized over the long run but the OS timestamps are not accurate; the PHY timestamps are accurate but they show a drift. To leverage the best features of both systems, we propose to stabilize the OS clock with a GPS and to remap the PHY timestamps over the OS/GPS time. This method is well suited for challenged scenarios like VANETs as no signaling is needed between nodes. We apply our approach to VANET monitoring and evaluate it on packet traces collected from our testbed. The results show that our solution reduces the mean synchronization error to 3 μs.

In this paper, we study the inter-domain Autonomous System (AS)-level routing problem within an alliance of ASs. We first describe the framework of our work, based on the introduction of a service plane for automatic multi-domain service provisioning. We adopt an abstract representation of domain relationships by means of directional metrics which are applied to a triplet (ingress point, transit AS, egress point) where the ingress and egress points can be ASs or routers. Then, we focus on the point-to-point and multipoint AS-level routing problems that arise in such an architecture. We propose an original approach that reaches near optimal solutions with tractable computation times. A further contribution of this paper is that a heavy step in the proposed heuristic can be precomputed, independently of the service demands. Moreover, we describe how in this context AS-level path diversity can be considered, and present the related extension of our heuristic. By extensive tests on AS graphs derived from the Internet, we show that our heuristic is often equal or a few percent close to the optimal, and that, in the case of precomputation, its time consumption can be much lower than with other well-known algorithms.

The design of the future Internet is facing real challenges on network architecture. Attempts to resolve the issues related to naming/addressing, middle boxes, QoS-Security-Mobility interactions, cross-layer and inter-domain usually lead to endless debates. This is because the structure of the Internet has become too complex and has evolved with new functions added which are not always compatible with the existing functions. In order to analyze the architecture of the Internet in a strict manner, it is necessary to understand in depth the composition of functionalities within a protocol or between protocols. This paper presents a study on the composition of network functionalities and highlights future directions towards a theory for network architectures which includes the principles that network architectures should follow to ensure the normal operation of the member functions, detect all possible conflicts between them as well as figure out impossibilities.

Adapting virtualization concepts to satisfy network telecommunication challenges receives more and more attention. The virtual network environment is formed by the amount of bounded virtual resources provided by physical network equipments. Deploying virtual network infrastructure has recently caught more research interests due to its flexibility and manageability. However, virtual network deployment is not evident as it should be. Therefore, it is now necessary to provide virtual environment design to coexist virtual networks and their respective operators. In this article, we describe our virtual network environment architecture. We explain the proposed organization strategies to improve virtual network urbanization. Quality of service (QoS) is a key problem in wireless environments where bandwidth is scarce and channel conditions are time varying and sometimes implies highly packet losses. IEEE 802.11b/g/a wireless LAN (WLAN) are the most widely used WLAN standards today, and the IEEE 802.11e QoS enhancement standard exists and introduces QoS support for multimedia applications. This paper presents a class based admission control algorithm for 802.11e based wireless local area networks. The strengths of our admission control is dynamicity and flexibility of the algorithm, which adapts to the situation of the BSS, like global load, number of best effort AC, and position of QSTA by report of QAP, thing that have never been taken together, but each solutions have used a point of sight separately. Thus it achieves higher throughput than other admission control for 802.11 e. The idea which consists of changing parameters [AIFSN, CWmin and CWmax] of best effort flows, for decreasing collisions, is used, so we think that it is an efficient way to protect QoS flows from best effort flows, and to allow reducing then number of collisions. So we increase AIFSN [best effort flow], CWmin and CWmax only at 70% of load of network, to prevent starvations of best effort flows, and so we increase rate utilization of channel. We also use the current rate transmission of QSTAs, according to their positions, instead of the minimum rate transmission used by standard 802.11e, for calculate the load of network and derived the TXOPi necessary for all the stations, with i=1 to number of active stations. The 802.11e standard starves the low priority traffic in case of high load, and leads to higher collision rates, and did not make a good estimate of weight of queues, so there is an unbalance enters the flows with high priorities. A discussion is presented in detail using simulation-based evaluations, with an aim of comparing results of our admission control algorithm, with the 802.11e standard and the F- - HCF algorithm. Results reveal an improvement of the network load and a decrease of the number of collisions.

SUN

The Situated Ubiquitous Network (SUN) project aims at offering a seamless mobility and service continuity in the Internet of Things connected by Radio (IoTcR). This revolutionary concept has emerged in a context of the democratization of smart users equipment and the perpetual miniaturization of such devices. The purpose of IoTcR is to connect the worldNULLs equipment in order to collect data about things and to embed intelligence as well. This paper presents an innovative approach, based on the autonomic paradigm, to address the user mobility and service continuity issues in a context of heterogeneity that characterizes IoTcR. Our contribution deals with the design of a distributed knowledge plane consisting of information models and ontologies that unifies the vocabulary shared between “Things”, drives decisions and provides increased analysis and inference capabilities. As a part of this effort, we have designed an ontology that gathers the main information for anticipating handovers and preventing Quality of Service degradation. Our proposal is based on a multi-agent approach, which fits with the autonomic principles adopted in the SUN project.

Although significant efforts have been devoted in the literature to measurements of the Internet topology, little attention has been given to the qualification of routing deviations and multipath dynamics at the Autonomous System (AS) routing level. We observed Internet AS-level routes toward thousands of destinations for several weeks between 2009 and 2010 to have a better understanding of these phenomena, nowadays. Using a modified form of traceroute at the state of the art called paris-traceroute, able to detect load-balancing, we sampled thousands of AS-level routes for several weeks. By an extensive analysis, we found that between 15% and 17% of the monitored destinations experiences AS-path deviations, and that load balancing at the AS-level (i.e., forms of BGP multipath) is not widespread at all, and, when frequently used, it is limited to a sort of AS confederation.

Horizontal Hand Over (HHO)

This paper addresses handover decision instability which impacts negatively on both user perception and network performances. To this aim, a new technique called The HandOver Decision STAbility Technique (HODSTAT) is proposed for horizontal handover in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) based on IEEE 802.11standard. HODSTAT is based on a hysteresis margin analysis that, combined with a utilitybased function, evaluates the need for the handover and determines if the handover is needed or avoided. Indeed, if a Mobile Terminal (MT) only transiently hands over to a better network, the gain from using this new network may be diminished by the handover overhead and short usage duration. The approach that we adopt throughout this article aims at reducing the minimum handover occurrence that leads to the interruption of network connectivity (this is due to the nature of handover in WLAN which is a break before make which causes additional delay and packet loss). To this end, MT rather performs a handover only if the connectivity of the current network is threatened or if the performance of a neighboring network is really better comparing the current one with a hysteresis margin. This hysteresis should make a tradeoff between handover occurrence and the necessity to change the current network of attachment. Our extensive simulation results show that our proposed algorithm outperforms other decision stability approaches for handover decision algorithm.

Existing services require assurable end-to-end quality of service, security and reliability constraints. Therefore, the networks involved in the transport of the data must cooperate to satisfy those constraints. In a next generation Internet, each of those networks may be managed by different entities. Furthermore, their policies and service level agreements (SLAs) will differ, as well as the autonomic management systems controlling them. In this context, we in the Autonomic Internet (AutoI) consortium propose the Orchestration Plane (OP), which promotes the interaction among different Autonomic Management Systems (AMSs). The OP mediates the communication and negotiation among AMSs, ensuring that their SLAs and policies meet the requirements needed for the provisioning of the services. It also simplifies the federation of domains and the distribution of new services in virtualised network environments.

We present a simulation platform for access selection algorithms in heterogeneous wireless networks, called “ABCDecision”. The simulator implements the different parts of an Always Best Connected (ABC) system, including Access Technology Selector (ATS), Radio Access Networks (RANs), and users. After describing the architecture of the simulator, we show an overview of the existing decision algorithms for access selection. Then we propose a new selection algorithm in heterogeneous networks and we run a set of simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm in comparison with the existing ones. The performance results, in terms of the occupancy rate, show that our algorithm achieves a load balancing distribution between networks by taking into consideration the capacities of the available cells.

We consider the problem of cooperative distributed routing optimization in multi-domain/multi-provider networks. The main object of our investigation are ASON/G-MPLS transport networks, still the results of our investigations could be extended to any multi-domain network where particular domains have limited mutual visibility of intra-domain resources. This paper refines a distributed decomposition mechanism for reliable cooperative optimization of flow reservation levels introduced, by considering the fundamental issue of fair income distribution. The proposed idea of fair income distribution mechanism has been adopted from the theory of cooperative games (Shapley value). We show the benefits of adopting the proposed income distribution scheme by numerical simulations.

Les propriétés dont disposent les réseaux sans _l par rapport aux réseaux filaires présentent des nouveaux défis lors de la conception des protocoles de communication et de routage. Ces derniers doivent être dynamiquement adaptatifs aux spécificités du canal radio et doivent chercher à satisfaire les exigences en Qualité de Service (QoS) des applications supportées. Pour implémenter efficacement des propriétés de QoS, la tendance actuelle consiste à développer des approches cross-layer permettant aux différentes couches réseau de coopérer. Cette notion cross-layer implique NULLune cassureNULL de la notion de NULLcouches isoléesNULL et un échange dNULLinformations entre toutes les couches. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons une architecture cross-layer, modulaire, adaptable et extensible nommée XLEngine (Cross Layer Engine). Un des composants de cette architecture, appelé NetworkCLE, permet de maintenir une connaissance de lNULLétat du réseau (network view). Cette network view permet dNULLajuster les stratégies dNULLadaptations locales aux stations pour quNULLelles tiennent en considération les spécificités des réseaux sans _l, ainsi que la présence des autres stations dans le réseau. Le maintien dNULLune connaissance du réseau au niveau de chaque station est réalisé dNULLune manière distribuée à lNULLaide dNULLun nouveau protocole, le Local View Management Protocol (LVMP) basé sur une approche de diffusion sélective des connaissances locales des stations (local view). Pour évaluer XLEngine, nous étions menés à développer des services capables de tirer profit de cette architecture. Nous avons, alors, ciblé les réseaux mobiles ad hoc et nous avons développé un nouveau protocole de routage avec QoS appelé QoS Position Aided Routing protocol (QoS-PAR). QoS-PAR se distingue des autres protocoles de routage par : (1) son exploitation de la base de connaissances cross-layer locale collectées à partir des couches et de la base de connaissance de lNULLétat du réseau collectée à partir des autres stations du réseau (la network view), (2) son intégration dNULLun mécanisme de contrôle dNULLadmission, (3) son intégration dNULLun mécanisme de réservation des ressources et (4) sa composante de routage géographique. LNULLarchitecture XLEngine ainsi que les protocoles LVMP et QoS-PAR sont implémentés sous le simulateur réseau J-Sim. Nous avons étudié les performances de XLEngine et des deux protocoles selon différents scénarios. Nous avons comparé les performances de QoS-PAR par rapport au protocole de routage AODV. Nous avons comparé les performances de XLEngine par rapport à lNULLarchitecture en couches. Les résultats obtenus montrent le gain en performances significatif de QoS-PAR basé sur XLEngine en termes de délai de bout en bout (avec un délai inférieur jusquNULLà 45 fois), de débit obtenu (la contrainte de bande passante minimale est respectée à 91%) et du taux de livraison des paquets de données respectant la contrainte de délai (meilleur jusquNULLà 60%) par rapport à AODV basé sur lNULLarchitecture en couches. En ce qui concerne lNULLoverhead, celui généré par AODV peut atteindre jusquNULLà sept fois plus celui généré avec QoS-PAR. Celui généré par LVMP est acceptable et contribue largement à lNULLamélioration de la QoS.

Efficient location management is one of the major challenges in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). Due to the high mobility of vehicles and the increase in their number, the location information updating and querying messages will consume the limited bandwidth of VANETs. This involves the development of a scalable and locality-aware location service management protocol. In this paper, we propose a promising solution called the Modified Region-based Location Service Management Protocol (MRLSMP), which utilizes the existing infrastructure on the road as a location management service entity. To evaluate the efficiency of our proposal, we compare our scheme with existing solutions using both analytical and simulation approaches. Specifically, we develop analytical models to evaluate the total control overhead. Numerical and simulation results show that our protocol scales better than existing schemes, when increasing the size of VANETs which enhances the feasibility of such large scale ad hoc networks.

ADMA represents an Autonomous Decentralized Management Architecture designed to provide Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) with autonomic principles. It allows the network to configure and reconfigure itself under environment changes without any human intervention. Our solution operates in a peer-to-peer manner and does not require any centralized entity to perform network management functions. Each mobile node implementing ADMA components is able to take the appropriate decision based on predefined high level policies and collected monitoring information. We present in this paper the basic components of an ADMA node. Then, we provide a simple self-configuring case study of our design considering Voice over IP (VoIP) as a test application. Simulation results show an improvement of the VoIP delay and loss rate while applying predefined policies.

The provision of Quality of Service (QoS) over wireless networks has recently been the subject of intensive research. There is a growing consensus among the research community that combining cross-layering and autonomic paradigms is, until now, the best alternative for better QoS support in such networks. The cross-layer concept is recommended to overcome the performance problems of the wireless channel, and the autonomic concept is imposed as the size and complexity of networks grow. Most proposed cross-layer architectures lack of autonomicity. Moreover, the majority of them considers purely local information in their optimizations and do not care about the effects of such egoistic behavior on other wireless nodes. This non-collaborative behavior limits the overall system performance. We combine cross-layering and autonomic concepts in the design of a new architecture called XLEngine (Cross-Layer Engine) having the ability to make optimizations based on local and network wide knowledge. We implemented XLEngine under the simulator J-Sim. We show, through simulations, that our XLEngine architecture significantly outperforms the layered architecture.

Combining cross-layering and autonomic paradigms is considered, until now, the best alternative for better Quality of Service (QoS) support in wireless networks. We adopt this combination in the design of a new architecture called Cross- Layer Engine (XLEngine) having the ability to make optimizations based on local and network wide knowledge. The unique mode to acquire this network knowledge is that every node notifies other nodes about its local metrics (called local view). To achieve this goal, we propose a new protocol called the Local View Management Protocol (LVMP). LVMP implements a selective rebroadcast technique to reduce the number of nodes participating in the local view dissemination process while assuring that this local view attains all nodes. We give a performance evaluation of LVMP and we study the impact of the overhead on the overall XLEngine performance.

Efficient mobility management is one of the major challenges for next-generation mobile systems. Indeed, a mobile node (MN) within an access network may cause excessive signaling traffic and service disruption due to frequent handoffs. The two latter effects need to be minimized to support quality of service (QoS) requirements of emerging multimedia applications. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive micromobility management scheme designed to track efficiently the mobility of nodes so as to minimize both handoff latency and total signaling cost while ensuring the MN’s QoS requirements. We introduce the concept of residing area. Accordingly, the micromobility domain is divided into virtual residing areas where the MN limits its signaling exchanges within this local region instead of communicating with the relatively far away root of the domain at each handoff occurrence. A key distinguishing feature of our solution is its adaptive nature since the virtual residing areas are constructed according to the current network state and the QoS constraints. To evaluate the efficiency of our proposal, we compare our scheme with existing solutions using both analytical and simulation approaches for the 2-D random walk model as well as real mobility patterns. Numerical and simulation results show that our proposed scheme can significantly reduce registration updates and link usage costs and provide low handoff latency and packet loss rate under various scenarios.

One of the major concerns in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) is the radio resource utilization efficiency, which can be enhanced by managing efficiently the mobility of users as well as the interference effect among neighboring links. To achieve this, we propose in this paper the use of clustering and a new interference-aware routing metric, called INX Specifically, we first propose two mobility-aware clustering algorithms that take into consideration the mobility properties of users in order to improve the WMN performance. Then, we propose the use of INX in the clustering process in order to maximize the total network throughput. We prove through simulations that both clustering schemes can achieve significant gains in terms of radio resource utilization and load balancing, especially when using the INX metric. Hence, and as a main contribution, we show that by taking into account the interference effect between links, we can improve the performance of our clustering algorithms and increase the gain initially observed with the conventional hop-count metric.

We consider a cross-layer scheme for the downlink multiuser Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) for mobile WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) based on IEEE802.16e standard. We propose an intelligent Medium Access Control (MAC) that adapts with the physical layer (PHY) in response to the different QoS requirements of the diverse service flows in the system. This adaptation is represented by a joint packet scheduling and slot allocation scheme interaction in both MAC and PHY layers. Based on this interaction, a fair and efficient QoS guaranteed resource allocation for a mixture of real-time and non real-time service flows is achieved. We provide extensive simulation results showing the performance aspects of the proposed cross-layer scheme.

Abstract—Voice over Wireless LAN (VoWLAN) is becoming more and more helpful in our life and is expected to be among the most important applications in next generation networks. However, the maximum number of VoIP sessions that a WLAN can ensure is very small. Moreover, when the WLAN reaches its capacity the addition of one VoIP session affects the QoS parameters of all VoIP sessions. In this paper, we propose an adaptive technique to ensure the active VoIP sessions of users with high priority (from a provider perspective). Thus, in order to guarantee the quality of high priority sessions, we propose to downgrade the quality (low but acceptable MOS) of user sessions with low priority by changing their used codecs (e.g., ITU G729 instead of ITU G711). This technique and all related monitoring functions are defined into the proposed session-based QoS management architecture. In order to validate our approach a complete test-bed is made up by which we have performed some feasibility and gain tests. Keywords : VoWLAN, Codec switching, QoS management and control.

Cross-layering is a novel paradigm in wireless local area networks (WLAN) proposed to improve the support of QoS (Quality of Service) traffic. Many cross-layer solutions have already been developed. They diverge in the way the crosslayer concept is implemented and the type of performance gain they recommend. In parallel to cross-layering, a new network paradigm is growing: the autonomic paradigm appearing as the size and complexity of networks grow. There is a growing consensus among the research community that combining cross-layering and autonomic paradigms is, until now, the best alternative for better QoS support in WLANs. We combine cross-layering and autonomic concepts in the design of a new architecture called XLEngine (Cross-Layer Engine) having the ability to make optimizations based on local and network wide knowledge. XLEngine is implemented and simulated under the JSim simulator for different wireless scenarios. Simulation results show that XLEngine outperforms the classic layered architectur

In the new area of heterogeneous environments, roaming users, using multi-interface mobile terminals, need to access to services anytime and anywhere. For that, a seamless vertical handover has to be considered. In our paper, we propose a 3G/UMTS-WLAN loosely-coupled interworking architecture with Mobile IP as a service continuity solution. We focus on a mobile-controlled vertical handover management scheme. Our solution chooses the best access network according to user preferences and it maintains the ongoing session. It has several advantages to be simple and to generate minor changes at the network side. Moreover, MIP-based handover execution procedure is prepared thanks to a handover decision taken at the mobile side. The scheme proposes an interesting answer to intersystem and inter-domain mobility management issues. Finally, a simulation model is developed to validate the feasibility of the proposed 3G/UMTS-WLAN architecture.

We consider a channel aware scheduling for the downlink multi-service flows in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) based mobile WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access)system. We propose an intelligent Medium Access Control (MAC) that adapts with the physical layer in response to the different QoS requirements of the diverse service flows in the system. This adaptation is represented by a joint packet scheduling and slot allocation scheme interaction in both MAC and PHY layers. Based on this interaction, a fair and efficient QoS guaranteed resource allocation for a mixed real-time and non real-time service flows is achieved. We provide extensive simulation results showing the performance aspects of the proposed cross-layer scheme.

IEEE 802.16 standard suite defines two main polling mode: unicast polling and contention-base polling including multicast and broadcast polling. Unicast polling completely overcomes the request collision and is suitable for real-time application. Contention-based polling suffers from collisions and be suitable for non-real-time applications. While the standard defined uplink scheduling services for implementing effectively the polling mechanisms, it does not define how exactly adaptation algorithm should be developed. In this paper we evaluate the performance of different polling mechanisms defined in IEEE 802.16 by simulation. We also propose a new optimal unicast and contention-based mixed polling mechanism and showed that this optimal mixed polling mechanism could always achieve better performance than any polling mechanisms defined in IEEE 802.16.

Networks are becoming service-aware implying that all relevant business goals pertaining to a service are fulfilled, and also the network resources are used optimally. Future Internet Networks (FIN) have time varying topology (e.g. such networks are envisaged in Autonomic Internet [1], FIND program [2], GENI program [3], FIRE program [4], Ambient Networks [5], Ad-hoc networks [6]) and service availability and service context change as nodes join and leave the networks. In this paper we propose and evaluate a new self-organising service management system that manages such changes known as the Overlay Management Backbones (OMBs). The OMB is a self-organising solution to the problem space in which each OMB node is dynamically assigned a different service context task. The selection of OMB nodes is conducted automatically, without the need of relatively heavyweighted dynamic negotiations. Our solution relies on the scalability and dynamicity advantages of Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs). This system is needed to select continuously, automatically, and dynamically a set of network nodes, to become responsible for collecting the availability information of service context in the changing network. This solution advances the state of the art avoiding dynamic negotiations between all network nodes reducing management complexity and cost for bandwidth-limited environments.

Future generation wireless networks should provide to mobile users the best connectivity to services anywhere at anytime. The most challenging problem is the seamless intersystem/vertical mobility across heterogeneous wireless networks. In order to answer it, a vertical handover management system is needed. In our paper, we propose an intelligent solution answering user requirements and ensuring service continuity. We focus on a vertical handover decision strategy based on the context-awareness concept. The given strategy chooses the appropriate time and the most suitable access network among those available to perform a handover. It uses advanced decision algorithms (for more efficiency and intelligence) and it is governed by handover policies as decision rules (for more flexibility and optimization). To maintain a seamless service continuity, handover execution is based on mobile IP functionalities. We study our decision system in a case of a 3G/UMTS-WLAN scenario and we discuss all the handover decision issues in our solution.

Efficient mobility management is one of the major challenges for next-generation mobile systems. Indeed, a mobile node (MN) within an access network may cause excessive signaling traffic and service disruption due to frequent handoffs. The two latter effects need to be minimized to support quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of emerging multimedia applications. In this perspective, we propose in this paper a new mobility management scheme designed to track host mobility efficiently so as to minimize both handoff latency and signaling cost. Building on and enhancing Mobile IP and taking advantage of MPLS traffic engineering capability, three mechanisms (FH-, FC- and MFC-Micro Mobile MPLS) are introduced. In order to assess the efficiency of our proposals, all protocols are compared. To achieve this, we develop analytical models to evaluate the signaling cost and link usage for both two-dimensional and one-dimensional mobility models. Additional mathematical models are also provided to derive handoff latency and packet loss rate. Numerical and simulation results show that the proposed mechanisms can significantly reduce the registration updates cost and provide low handoff latency and packet loss rate under various scenarios.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are fundamentally different from wired networks. They are autonomously formed with a collection of mobile nodes without any preexisting infrastructure or administrative support. In the last few years, Policy-Based Network Management (PBNM) has gained a considerable interest in order to reach adaptive and automated management goals in MANETs. Previous work in this ﬁeld either cluster-based or hierarchical architectures are highly dependent of the network topology. A distributed approach with a high degree of autonomy and self-management is still lacking. In this paper, we give an overview of existing policy-based management solutions and we focus on some of their limitations. We outline the need of incorporating self-conﬁguration property in the design of MANETs. Then, we present a new protocol for distributing policies and high level goals over all nodes in the network. Simulation-based performance evaluation results are described and analyzed.

This paper analyzes a trust model for mobile ad hoc networks. We provide nodes with a mechanism to build a trust relationship with its neighbors. The proposed model considers the recommendation of trustworthy neighbors and the experience of the node itself. The interactions are limited to direct neighbors in order to scale on mobile networks. The results show the efficiency and the trade-off of our model in the presence of mobility. We also analyze the advantages of considering the relationship maturity, i.e. for how long nodes know each other, to evaluate the trust level. The maturity parameter can decrease the trust level error up to 50%.

Slander attacks represent significant danger to distributed reputation systems. Malicious nodes can ally to lie about their neighbors and cause serious damage to the trust evaluation system. This paper presents and analyzes a trust model robust against slander attacks in ad hoc networks. We provide nodes with a mechanism to build a trust relationship with its neighbors. The results show the impact of slander attacks to our trust model. IEEE 802.16 standard suite defines the air interface specifications for fixed and mobile broadband access in wireless metropolitan area networks. Although the IEEE 802.16 MAC has been well-defined by various bandwidth allocation and scheduling mechanisms to support QoS for different applications, efficient bandwidth allocation still remain as an open issue. In this paper, we analyse and develop a mathematical model to evaluate the performance of the contention-based and delay-tolerant applications in IEEE 802.16 networks. We focus our attentions on allocating the uplink bandwidth efficiently, the basic goal is to optimize the performance with an optimal bandwidth allocation mechanism. The results of our analysis lay out clearly that a maximum uplink throughput and a minimum number of pending bandwidth request transmission can always be acquired by optimizing the contention period size in a frame. This optimal size is also influenced by the number of terminals in the network, which is also analyzed in the later part of the paper. Our results can be used for providing probabilistic throughput guarantee and determining the optimal contention period.

IEEE 802.16 standard suite defines the air interface specifications for fixed and mobile broadband access in wireless metropolitan area networks. Although the IEEE 802.16 MAC has been well-defined by various bandwidth allocation and scheduling mechanisms to support QoS for different applications, efficient bandwidth allocation still remain as an open issue. In this paper, we analyse and develop a mathematical model to evaluate the performance of the contention-based and delay-tolerant applications in IEEE 802.16 networks. We focus our attentions on allocating the uplink bandwidth efficiently, the basic goal is to optimize the performance with an optimal bandwidth allocation mechanism. The results of our analysis lay out clearly that a maximum uplink throughput and a minimum number of pending bandwidth request transmission can always be acquired by optimizing the contention period size in a frame. This optimal size is also influenced by the number of terminals in the network, which is also analyzed in the later part of the paper. Our results can be used for providing probabilistic throughput guarantee and determining the optimal contention period.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are spontaneously formed with a set of wireless nodes without any existing infrastructure or administrative support. The intrinsic characteristics of these networks such as the dynamic topology and the scarcity of resources mainly bandwidth and nodes battery life make network management process a challenging task. In this paper, we present the design and a performance evaluation of a distributed policy management system that aims to enable self-QoS-management of MANETs. The key idea is to extend policy decision point (PDP) functionalities to every mobile ad hoc node in order to support self-conﬁguration and self-adaptation capabilities. We propose the management of the MANET in a fully distributed manner using a new protocol named DPMP for Distributed Policy Management Protocol. First, we present our decentralized framework. Then, we evaluate the proposed policy distribution mechanism through simulations. Results show that the protocol incurs low latency and message overhead for policies distribution while varying node mobility, network size and density.

In the new area of heterogeneous environments, roaming users, using multi-interface mobile terminals, need the best connectivity to services anytime and anywhere. To reach this goal, a handover management solution is needed. In this paper, we propose a mobile centered scheme in order to bring intelligence and autonomicity aspects. Our scheme is based on an autonomic-oriented architecture which is able to adapt dynamically to environment changes. It contains three main planes : the Knowledge, the Piloting and the Control planes. The knowledge is defined as the context environment (access network availability, MT’s movement, QoS parameters, user preferences, etc.). The piloting system, driven by the knowledge, provides flexibility and efficiency thanks to advanced decision algorithms and policies governing the whole decision process. Thus, the appropriate control mechanism (i.e. the target access network) is selected while satisfying user and system requirements and ensuring service continuity for the demanding service.

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) has significantly increased the transmission capacity of todayNULLs optical networks. An increase in the available bandwidth is promoting at the same time the introduction of new services, each having different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In this regard, QoS parameters applicable to connection setup, namely connection blocking probability and connection setup time, are expected to greatly influence the procedure of lightpath setup. In view of this, we propose to consider the connection setup time requirement as a (timely increasing) priority indicator during optical connection provisioning. In other words, we envisage in this letter the assignment of the highest setup priority to those optical connection requests having the shortest setup time requirements. To achieve this purpose, we adapt the well known Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling discipline to the particular case of optical connection setup management. In order to gauge the impact of our proposal on the QoS perceived by optical clients, we introduce in this letter a computaional method. This latter is used for the assessment of the percentage of optical connections that are successfully established under the proposed setup management approach.

In the next generation of wireless networks, mobile users can move between heterogeneous networks, using terminals with multiple access interfaces and non-real-time or real-time services. The most important issue in such environment is the Always Best Connected (ABC) concept allowing the best connectivity to applications anywhere at anytime. To answer ABC requirement, various vertical handover decision strategies have been proposed in the literature recently, using advanced tools and proven concepts. In this paper, we give an overview of the most interesting and recent strategies. We classify it into five categories for which we present their main characteristics. We also compare each one with the others in order to introduce our vertical handover decision approach.

The difficulty to compare network simulators is a major obstacle to the broader adoption of these tools. This problem particularly affects 802.11 simulators because the 802.11 protocol is complex and simulators contain several simplifications that are difficult to evaluate. In this paper, we present a generic visualization system able to interface with the 802.11 protocol implemented in NS-2 and Glomosim. Our tool allows to emphasize the common behaviours and divergences observed between the simulators and the IEEE 802.11 standard. Our contribution includes the definition of a new method to compare simulators and the publication of the most complete list to date of modeling differences relative to NS-2 and Glomosim lower layers.

Wireless network interface cards (WNIC) are currently moving from hardwired devices to autonomic software. This paper proposes a new rationale for the design of WNIC that i) takes into account the need to integrate an ever increasing number of network features, ii) supports the traceability of requirements in system development and iii) allows flexibility at the software architecture level. Our solution relies on the FODA (feature oriented domain analysis) and FORM (feature oriented reuse method) engineering methods to bridge the gap between the systemspsila specification and implementation. As an example, we show how a model of the 802.11 standard based on this method can reproduce the features of a particular channel access protocol or be extended to the 802.11g standard.

XAV : A Fast and Flexible Tracing Framework for Network Simulation

With current network simulators, simulation results are obtained from flat trace files via sequential data access. To speed up simulation output analysis, we propose to store the simulation traces into data warehouse. Our proposed framework relies on a three-layer architecture, with the intermediary database layer serving the trace file post processing services. The trace files are accessed through SQL-like queries which greatly enhances the flexibility of the post processing tools. Furthermore, the database paradigm allows to separate the packets data from the nodes send and receive operations and thus to remove redundant information between simulation events. The global system relies on a new trace file format based on the popular XML language. XML pointers are used to create relationships between data so that post processing tools can navigate into simulation outputs. The tests are carried out under the MonetDB database. The obtained results show considerable response time improvement compared to traditional sequential access mode.

TodayNULLs networks are made of a large number of Network Elements (NEs) such as routers, firewalls, gateways, hosts, etc., each performing a set of elementary functions related to routing, security management, resource reservation, QoS management, etc. More sophisticated functions such as configuration of NEs, optimization of routing tables, troubleshooting, etc., are mainly managed in a centralized fashion often involving human intervention. However, networks are more and more faced with rapidly changing situations and increasingly complex configurations which are harder and harder to be adequately managed in a centralized manner, because of timing issues (collecting and processing information takes time) and complexity issues (dealing with networks centrally/globally is increasingly complex). In this paper we propose a Pilot-based Architecture (P2A) for future network control and management. This architecture is based on Distributed Intelligent Agents. This solution permits to perform a number of control and management functions in a decentralized way, dealing locally with simpler situations in a more responsive way. The P2A is made of Distributed Intelligent Agents, each capable of sensing and observing events and changes occurring locally. Agents communicate among neighbours to improve their knowledge of the situation in their neighbourhood and to make consolidated/coordinated decisions within an area of the network.

The availability of an optical connection is considered to be a critical service differentiator in WDM optical networks. In this regard, the design of a protection scheme that is able to improve the availability of high priority connections while making efficient use of optical resources is a major concern for optical network perators. In a previous work, we proposed the so-called priority-aware shared protection as a potential survivability scheme for next generation WDM networks to deal with the previously exhibited concern. This paper develops an online study whose main purpose is to assess the efficiency of the aforementioned protection scheme. Through this study, we show that the priority-aware shared protection strategy is able to achieve both the best efficiency in terms of resource usage and in terms of availability satisfaction rate compared to existing protection solutions.

A Novel Connection Setup Management Approach for Optical WDM Networks

Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) has significantly increased the transmission capacity of today’s optical networks. An increase in the available bandwidth is promoting at the same time the introduction of new services, each having different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In this regard, QoS parameters applicable to connection setup, namely connection blocking probability and connection setup time, are expected to greatly influence the procedure of lightpath setup. In view of this, we propose to consider the connection setup time requirement as a (timely increasing) priority indicator during optical connection provisioning. In other words, we envisage in this letter the assignment of the highest setup priority to those optical connection requests having the shortest setup time requirements. To achieve this purpose, we adapt the well known Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling discipline to the particular case of optical connection setup management. In order to gauge the impact of our proposal on the QoS perceived by optical clients, we introduce in this letter a computaional method. This latter is used for the assessment of the percentage of optical connections that are successfully established under the proposed setup management approach. In the next generation of wireless networks, mobile users should move across various access technologies, using multi-interface terminals and different types of services. The most important issue in such heterogeneous environment is the Always Best Connected (ABC) concept. It allows the best connectivity to services anywhere at anytime. For that, a seamless inter-system handover solution is needed. In our paper, we propose an intelligent solution, based on the context-awareness concept, ensuring service continuity and answering user requirements. We focus on the vertical handover decision issue. It performs whether and over which access network to hand over among those available. It uses advanced decision algorithms (for more efficiency and intelligence) and it is governed by handover policies as decision rules (for more flexibility and optimization).

In this paper, we analyse and develop a mathematical model to evaluate the uplink throughput of the contention-based and delay-tolerant applications in IEEE 802.16 network, the basic goal is to maximize the uplink data throughput with an optimal bandwidth allocation mechanism. Our analysis results can be used for providing probabilistic throughput guarantee and determining the optimal contention period in a IEEE 802.16 system.

Nous proposons un control basé sur les informations de sessions comme la priorité de l’utilisateur ou la durée de session…etc. qui peut arrêter une session pour garantir la QoS des autres sessions en cas de congestion. Nous adoptons une approche de haut en bas qui commence avec les objectifs et les stratégies du fournisseur d’accès à Internet (FAI), et les traduit en un ensemble de politiques qui définissent le comportement du réseau. Le but est d’atteindre un degré élevé d’adaptabilité et d’auto-configuration.

Dans les réseaux sans fil hétérogènes, une des problématiques les plus importantes concerne le concept "Always Best Connected" (ABC). Elle permet la meilleure connectivité aux services à tout moment et n’importe où pour les utilisateurs mobiles avec des terminaux multi-interfaces. Pour cela, le processus de handover vertical devrait, d’une part, assurer la continuité de service et, d’autre part, satisfaire les besoins de l’utilisateur. Dans cet article, nous nous focalisons sur la phase de décision du handover vertical. Elle répond à la condition "si le handover doit avoir lieu ou pas" et décide "vers quel réseau basculer parmi les réseaux d’accès disponibles". Nous proposons un schéma de décision du handover vertical, une solution centrée sur le terminal mobile. Il prend avantage de la sensibilité au contexte (plus de critères pour plus de précision), il utilise des algorithmes de décision avancés (pour plus d’efficacité et d’intelligence) et enfin il est piloté par des politiques de handover considérées comme des règles de décision (pour plus de flexibilité et d’optimisation).

In this paper, we propose a mathematical model with the aim to give guidelines for the dimensioning of WiMax bandwidth provisioning service to residential customers. Our proposal relies on the modeling of a CAC policy associated to a priority-based bandwidth sharing strategy. Both mechanisms aim to satisfy Quality of Service constraints while maximizing the gain of the system. But unlike in [1], we do not necessarily seek here for an optimal CAC policy. We rather consider a coordinate convex CAC policy, whose mathematical modeling leads to a tractable analytical resolution. We chose the Guaranteed Minima (GM) policy, which consists in reserving a specified amount of bandwidth for each traffic class. The remaining bandwidth is shared between all traffic classes.

The comparison and validation of MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc Network) simulators is a difficult and little covered research area because the internal of these tools are complex. The lack of work and visibility in the domain often arouse users’ negative feelings about simulation. In this article, we propose a framework dedicated to the validation, the comprehension and the analysis of MANET simulators. The system can process trace files generated by different versions of a simulator or different simulators. The solution is based on software instrumentation and the use of a standard trace format. It proposes three types of analysis: the representation of the network activity with timelines, the plotting of network metrics and the validation against the 802.11 standard specifications.

Cross-layering is an innovative concept in ad hoc networks for efficient multimedia transmissions in terms of providing better QoS (Quality of Service) support over a capacity-limited wireless channel. Many cross-layer proposals are already developed. They diverge in the way the sharing cross-layer concept is implemented and the type of performance gain they recommend. We propose a new cross-layer architecture, called XLEngine, for protocol QoS extensions in ad hoc networks. XLEngine is characterized by its generic nature and by its ability to support networkwide optimizations. This means that every node can have an overview of the network-wide state. To achieve this networkwide view, we propose the Local View Management Scheme (LVMS).

This paper introduces a new model dedicated to the Internet of Thing that interacts with active RFIDs. Instead of targeting IP stacks implementation in tags, we plan to support the Host Identity Protocol, which dissociates IP address and host location and that has been recently defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). We propose an architecture, in which a PORTAL entity realizes the bridge between classical IP world (compatible with the EPCglobal infrastructure) and HIP domains, dealing with a constellation of readers and tags.

This paper focus on optimal Call Admission Control (CAC) policy for an IEEE 802.16 Wireless MAN. This policy has two objectives: (i) statistically guarantee the QoS of UGS, rtPS and nrtPS connections, (ii) maximize the average revenue of the wireless link. To find such optimal policy, we model our CAC agent as a Constrained Semi-Markov Decision Processes (CSMDP). To the best of our knowledge, the only algorithm able to compute the optimal control policy of a CSMDP is based on the Linear Programming (L.P.) approach. Unfortunately, a realistic CAC problem with a large states space is intractable with the L.P. algorithm. Our work presents two contributions. First, the proposition of an optimal CAC for Triple-Play services support over a 802.16 WMAN. Second, the presentation of an alternative iterative algorithm that can be used to overcome the difficulties faced by the L.P. approach.

We consider whether the off-line compilation of a set of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) into low-level management policies can lead to the runtime maximization of the overall business profit for a service provider. Using a simple web application hosting SLA template for a utility service provider, we derive low-level QoS management policies and validate their consistency. We show how the default first come first served (FCFS) mechanism for the runtime scheduling of triggered policies fails to deliver an all times maximum business profit for the service provider. To achieve a better business profit, first a penalty/reward model that is derived from the SLA Service Level Objectives (SLOs) is used to assign runtime utility tags to triggered policies. Then three policy scheduling algorithms, which are based on the prediction of the future state of the running SLAs, are used to drive the runtime actions of the Policy Decision Point (PDP). The prediction function per see involved the unsolved problem of predicting in realtime the evolution of the transient state of a variant of an M/M/Ct/Ct queue. A simple approximative solution to the latter problem is provided. Finally, using the PS policy simulator tool, comparative simulation results for the business profit generated by each of the proposed policy scheduling algorithms are presented. PS is a novel tool which we have developed to respond to the increasing need of benchmarking SLA and policy-based management solutions.

This paper presents PS, a Policy Simulator tool intended to serve in the validation and performance evaluation of policy-based management solutions. PS is a discrete processbased simulation environment which allows the specification of all major components required for a policy-based management solution. These include the ability to specify management policies, events, metrics, probes, service-level objectives, servicelevel agreements (SLAs), as well as business-level objectives. We describe the main components of PS and show how it has been used to evaluate the performance of a policy-based management solution for a web application hosting SLA.

In this paper we address the problem of node localization in wireless heterogeneous networks focussing particularly on anchor selection methods to estimate position. The Optimized Link State Routing protocol (OLSR) [1] uses special nodes called Multipoint Relay (MPR) nodes to broadcast control messages within the network. We propose a novel approach based on using these Multipoint Relay (MPR) nodes as anchor nodes to estimate nodes positions. The IEEE 802.11 standard uses the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) protocol to share the medium among multiple stations. DCF is implanted in all the mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) simulators but its validation poses a true problem considering both the diversity of the models and their simplicity. The validation systems being hard to implement, the visualization tools represent, by comparison, auxiliary applications much more simple to develop. Behind their apparent simplicity, the graphic traces are extremely powerful teaching aids able to bring images of the DCF dysfunctions observed during the simulation execution. For this purpose, the simulation events are logged in trace files and then displayed in the form of timeline. The main contribution of this work is the definition of a tool allowing visualization of the network simulators activity at the data link layer. To show the potential of the approach, screenshots showing the dysfunctions observed in the NS-2 simulator are presented and analyzed.

We propose an architecture, in which a PORTAL entity realizes the bridge between classical IP world (compatible with the EPCglobal infrastructure) and HIP domains, dealing with a constellation of readers and tags.

Initialement les réseaux locaux sans fil IEEE 802.11 ont été conçus pour mettre en place des transmissions dans des endroits difficiles à câbler et à assurer la communication des données pour des applications mobiles. Ces réseaux doivent actuellement supporter des applications plus complexes ayant des besoins contraignants en terme de délai de bout en bout garanti, de bande passante disponible, etc. Pour apporter cette Qualité de Service (QoS), une des solutions émergeantes consiste à développer des approches cross-layer permettant aux différentes couches de coopérer ensemble afin de mieux supporter la QoS. La littérature nous présente une multitude dNULLarchitectures selon ce principe, mais aucune de celles-ci nNULLest normalisée. De plus, suivant les besoins à satisfaire, de nouvelles architectures sont régulièrement proposées, mettant en œuvre de nouveaux protocoles ou des adaptations de ces derniers. Par conséquence, nous risquons dNULLavoir, à long terme, des systèmes sans fil incompatibles développés selon différentes architectures cross-layer. Dans ce papier, nous proposons des éléments de base dNULLune architecture cross-layer modèle qui soit paramétrable, extensible, flexible et générique pour contribuer au support de la QoS dans les réseaux sans fil IEEE 802.11.

Avec la multiplication des objets communicants, la localisation est une composante majeure des futurs services informatiques. De nombreuses méthodes de localisation ont vu le jour pour les réseaux ad hoc mais rares sont celles qui s’adaptent à tous les types d’environnement et qui supportent les nombreuses contraintes inhérentes aux communications sans fil. Dans cet article nous présentons une méthode de localisation distribuée, légère et robuste. Elle repose sur la connectivité des nœuds du réseau, sur le tri des informations de voisinage et sur des calculs géométriques simples. Nous étudions aussi les performances de cet algorithme lorsque les nœuds sont mobiles et montrons qu’une sélection des voisins par enveloppe convexe simple augmente sensiblement la précision du positionnement.

Due to the lack of built-in quality of service support, IEEE 802.11 ad-hoc networks presents serious defies in meeting the demands of multimedia applications. To overcome such challenges, research in providing QoS guarantee in ad-hoc networks has been widely studied in latest years, and several QoS bapproaches have been proposed. Actually, cross-layer approaches have fascinated the attentions of researchers. They have interested at particular features of network performance by developing a multitude of cross-layer optimizations and adaptations implemented into several cross-layer architectures. We think that it is time that these various personal efforts be put into perspective; and that it is time to have a cross-layer architecture model which can serve as blueprint for development of cross-layer systems. In this paper, we take a step in that direction.

The worldwide network domain tendency to evolve towards dynamic Quality of Service (QoS) enabled optical networks is imminent. In such an evolution, imporving connection setup conditions is considered to be one of the major requirements. This paper proposes a novel connection setup management approach. The rationale behind this proposal lies in considering the optical connection setup time requirement as a (timely increasing) priority indicator during the setup/provisioning process. From this viewpoint, we adapt the well known Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling discipline to the particular case of optical connection setup management, which consists in giving highest priority to the connection request having the shortest setup time requirement. Another originality of this paper stems from the proposal of a computaional method for the assessment of optical connection setup success probability under the proposed management approach. The latter parameter, that is the connection setup success rate, is an important indicator for both optical operators and clients.

In this paper we present a comparison among three different monitoring functions to be used in a dynamic bandwidth renegotiation scheme. These functions aim at detecting the amount of unused resources in the network, which can be allocated to low priority data flows. These applications are not delay-sensitive and can be admitted by the call admission control with a bandwidth smaller than the nominal one. Simulation results comparing the performance of the three monitoring functions are presented, as well as an overhead analysis. Finally, we discuss the performance/complexity trade-off considering the three functions and determine the most viable one.

In this work we propose GXLA, a language for the specifica- tion of Service Level Agreements (SLA). GXLA represents the implemen- tation of the Generalized Service Level Agreement (GSLA) information model we proposed in a previous work. It supports multi-party service relationships through a role-based mechanism. It is intended to catch up the complex nature of service interactivity in the broader range of SLA modeling of all sorts of IT business relationships. GXLA is defined as an XML schema which provides a common ground between the entities in order to automate the configuration. GXLA can be used by service providers, service customers, and third parties in order to configure their respective IT systems. Each party can use its own independent SLA inter- pretation and deployment technique to enforce the role it has to play in the contract. An illustrative VoIP service negotiation shows how GXLA is used for automating the process of SLA negotiation and deployment. Third generation (3G) mobile cellular systems are available for higher capacity than previous generations deployed in many countries around the world. Design and developments beyond 3G are aiming not only for higher capacity in terms of number of users but also for higher data rate applications. The issue becomes the agenda of debate for both academia and industry around the world. This panel, which consists of international researchers from both industry and academia, will discuss various important issues related to 3G and beyond. Fourth Generation (4G) wireless communications systems have been proposed because of its difficulty of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technologies to achieve higher data rates and therefore, satisfy continuously ever increasing demand for data rates and bandwidth to meet multi-media userNULLs requirements. With ever increasing in data rates, the output power of the air-interface must be increased and or the size of the cell has to be decreased to accommodate higher rates. These implementations introduce difficulties. 4G communications networks may require distributed architecture, End-to-End Internet Protocol (IP), and peer-to-peer networking. Coverage and Capacity could be adaptive and dynamically accommodate changes in userNULLs patterns. Users could move automatically away from the congested routes to allow network to dynamically and automatically self-balance itself. Panel discussion also addresses the issues of security in the mobile and wireless IP. IP is dominating the next generation mobile and wireless technologies. Its security is becoming a major concern.

This paper introduces and analyzes a field estimation scheme for wireless sensor networks. Our scheme imitates the response of living beings to the surrounding events. The sensors define their periphery of attention based on their own readings. Readings differing from the expected behavior are considered events of interest and trigger the data transmission to the sink. The presented scheme is evaluated with real-site-collected data and the tradeoff between the amount of data sent to the sink and the reconstruction error is analyzed. Results show that significant reduction in the data transmission and, as a consequence, in the energy consumption of the network is achievable while keeping low the average reconstruction error.

This paper addresses the performance of geographical routing protocol in wireless networks, where only few nodes possess self-locating capability such as GPS. To be able to apply end-to-end geographical routing protocols, it is necessary every node know their position coordinates. We propose a method to infer such positioning information to any node, based only on connectivity and localization information obtained from the neighborhood. Three metrics are used to evaluate the performance of such a scheme : the density of useful nodes for geographical routing protocol, the reachability and the path length.

This document summarizes the work done during the first stage of Work Package 2 (WP2) (Seamless Service Delivery to the Nomadic User). The objective of WP2 is to specify an architecture allowing seamless service delivery across different wireless access networks and wired networks. To obtain this objective, in this first stage of the project, we elaborate a State of the art of terminal mobility in a heterogeneous network environment. The analysis is based on research publications, research projects and standards for an overall technology overview covering all lower network layers. Based on this study, some functional and operational requirements have been identified for the main issues relating on the WP2 (mobility management, roaming, interworking, security management and resource management). These requirements are the input for the basic architecture of SUMO (WP1).

Efficient dynamic resource provisioning algorithms are necessary to the development and automation of Quality of Service (QoS) networks. In this paper we introduce a new service model that provides quantitative per-flow bandwidth guarantees, where users subscribe for a guaranteed rate; moreover, the network periodically individuates unused bandwidth and proposes short-term contracts where extra-bandwidth is allocated and guaranteed exclusively to users who can exploit it to transmit at a rate higher than their subscribed rate. To implement this service model we propose a dynamic provisioning architecture for intra-domain Quality of Service networks. We develop an efficient bandwidth allocation algorithm that takes explicitly into account traffic statistics to increase the users’ benefit and the network revenue simultaneously. We demonstrate through simulation in realistic network scenarios that the proposed dynamic provisioning model is superior to static provisioning in providing resource allocation both in terms of total accepted load and network revenue.

ABSTRACT In this work, we propose GXLA, a language for the specification of Service Level Agreement (SLA). GXLA represents the implementation of the Generalized Service Level Agreement (GSLA) information model we proposed in a previous work. GXLA supports multi-party service relationships through a role-based mechanism. It is intended to catch up the complex nature of service interactivity in the broader range of SLA modelling of all sorts of it business relationships. The GXLA language is based on XML; it is defined as an xml schema. GXLA can be used by both service providers and service customers in order to configure their respective systems. Each party can use its own independent SLA interpretation and deployment technique to enforce the role it has to play in the contract. Finally, we illustrate our proposition through a use case. Nowadays, with the normalization of the 802.11 standard and the emerging of Wi-Fi low cost devices, many testbeds use this wireless technology to realize ad-hoc networks. The 802.11 security protocol, WEP, has not be designed by security experts. It results in a flawed protocol. The secret key shared between all 802.11 devices can be retrieved by attackers passively collecting data over the wireless network. TKIP, that solves this problem by periodically refreshing the keys between the access points and the wireless clients, has been standardized. But 802.11 ad-hoc networks remain unsafe. We address the problem of security in ad-hoc environments by using smart cards to handle the actual WEP-based 802.11 networking adapters to refresh the WEP key, like TKIP does in infrastructure environments.

In this paper, we introduce a Business Aware Framework for the Management of policy enabled IT Systems and its application to Utility Computing Environments. The framework couples two main subsystems on top of an IETF-like policy-based resource control layer. They are MBO (Management by Business Objectives) where the decision ability supported by analysis of business objectives resides, and GSLA (Generalized SLA), an advanced framework for SLA driven management that lends itself quite naturally to the derivation of IT management policies from the SLAs that the enterprise has contracted. We discuss the advantages and the limitations of the state-of-art policy-based approach to systems management, mainly the lack of business and service level context to drive policy-related decisions at system run-time. We then explain how this is remedied in our framework through the interaction mechanism between the reactive policy-based resource control layer and the more proactive business driven decision-making engine

WiMedia, Wi-Fi, WiMax, Wi-Mobile, WiRAN, the Wi-family is getting bigger; so does the network architecture. It is encouraging to see the fast development of the new IEEE wireless technologies promising the ultimate Internet service deployment on wireless and mobile infrastructures since they would offer larger bandwidth at cheaper price compared to the telecommunication wireless radio resource. However it is disquieting to see that the TCP/IP protocol stack which is supposed to be the heart of the Internet services deployment is not evolving as fast as the wireless technologies do. Here we come up with the hard question which is the network performance of the TCP/IP architecture over wireless networks. It is probably too early to decide to replace TCP/IP by another protocol stack for wireless network support, but it is important to not ignore the problem and analyse the main drawbacks of TCP/IP in wireless networks and think about a new architecture of network communication over the wireless networks. This paper provides a brief survey of what we name here the Wi-family wireless technologies, and emphasizes on new network architecture to optimize the TCP/IP behaviour worsen by the wireless characteristics.
