MobileCloud (FP7)

FP7

Nowadays, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are quickly becoming the prominent computing and communication platform, which allows billions of people to interact with each other and access to diverse resources and information through wireless networks, efficiently and ubiquitously. On the other hand, cloud computing emerges as “a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.” Essentially, cloud computing provides a uniform platform to access virtualized resources managed by an Internet-based cluster system, and offers a range of reliable and transparent services addressing content-centric and computation-centric tasks. The convergence of mobile computing and cloud computing forms a new paradigm: mobile cloud computing, which enables a wide range of new applications such as positioning and navigation, location-based services, e-health, etc. With this paradigm, mobile users and applications may outsource their computing or storage infrastructure e.g., for cost saving or energy-saving reasons. To make these services and applications available and sustainable, it is critical to understand the mobile cloud computing paradigm at a fundamental level. The objective of the proposed joint exchange project is thus to provide a stimulating and structured platform for the exchange of researchers and for the joint development of innovative ideas in the emerging areas within mobile cloud computing (and beyond). To achieve this goal, a broad combination of research institutions in Europe and China will collaborate together and create a multidisciplinary (cloud computing, mobile computing, telecommunications, computer systems and network optimization) and international (China plus four EU member states) environment for an innovative research experience and knowledge exchange in mobile cloud computing. The specific S&T objectives of MobileCloud are to investigate innovative methodologies and approaches to optimize mobile cloud computing resources and satisfy service requirements including energy efficiency and high resource utilization in the emerging cloud computing era.
